Gone off Kindle
When the Kindle first came out, I loved it.

I've changed my mind.

Don't know why exactly, because it's the same words you read whether on paper or screen. But there's something about the printed word, about the act of holding a book and turning its pages, the smell of printed paper, the appreciation of a well-produced physical book particularly in hardback.

Anyone else feel the same?

Some of you are making me miss my collection of physical books.

Re: Gone off Kindle
Never bought a Kindle, still love to have the physical book, but I have the Kindle reader on my iPhone and keep a book on there in case I finish the books I have with me when travelling, just as an emergency back up, very handy. If it were a separate device, don't think I'd bother

Re: Gone off Kindle
I feel the same way as OP. The only reason I still use an e-reader at all is due to lack of space, and my disappointment in the quality of most contemporary printed books.

There is no substitute for the experience of a quality hardcover - the feel of the paper - even the smell.

There is also something to varying fonts/typesets, etc. from book to book. When reading via e-reader, the presentation is homogenized and there is a tangible affect on me at least.

Can you accidentally open a kindle on the wrong page and read a passage out of context that cuts straight through to your heart

I thought Kindle paper screens weren't bothered by sunlight?

Re: Gone off Kindle
One issue I have with my kindle HD is sunny days make it difficult to see the screen. But apart from this I am a kindle man until I die

Re: Gone off Kindle
I have an old-ish Kindle with a very basic (unusable) internet browser. It's terrible for anything except reading properly formatted e-books, which is a shame because I was hoping it would be good for reading pre-downloaded pdfs such as tube map etc.

But I like the fact that it is a dedicated device for doing one thing very well - reading books. I think this appeal is lost in the new Fire version which is just another tablet computer.

you might be interested in a book called "The Information" by James Gleich which is about the effect that written language (and by extension information) has had on us as a species. Don't listen to it though as it is too dense to take in passively.

Coffee,

totally agree. I'll never give up the tactile sensation of reading to an elecronic device. I also don't like the propect of having to replace the device every 3-4 years or worry about file corruption.

Interesting.

Ever read/listened (not sure but maybe available) to any Walter Ong.

Re: Gone off Kindle

Humans are evolved to listen to stories, fictional and non-fictional. The written word on any medium is far inferior to the spoken word, and is but a glitch on our evolutionary journey.

Hence Audiobooks win, 3-0.

I'm an audiobook man. I can't seem to get into books any more. I read a bit then put them aside and forget about them.

Re: Gone off Kindle
You can think about wanting a book, press buy on your computer and start reading it straight away. It's very light. you can take as many books as you like on holiday. you can put it in a clamp by your bed and read read without having to hold it. You don't get book shelves full of stuff that you'll never read again. You can get classic literature for nothing or just a few pence. if a word you don't know comes up you can press it and get an instant definition.

What's not to like?

I agree 100% with the OP , the only reason i use a Kindle is due to the fact that i am running out of room for new books

+ reading a good book then passing it on to someone else. Or having someone round who peruses the bookshelf and asks if i'd recommend anything.

Maybe I missed my calling as a librarian.

"seeing the remaining pages dwindle..." Good point, hadn't thought of that. Better than an electronic percentage.

Re: Gone off Kindle
And I can't get on with Kindles. I love technology and will embrace anything new, but I just like books too much. The whole experience is fun - turning each page, seeing the remaining pages dwindle, glancing back to re-read something....

They're definitely brilliant - in many ways I'm envious on the beach when I see people with them, but I'll take books.

Oh, and if I still commuted into London then I'd get through a Kindle a week as I was forever falling asleep and dropping my book.

We all only read WH-related books, therefore this thread is fine.

"Interesting to see how quickly that changes with kids that are raised reading totally from digital sources."

I guess that will be the real test. How much does what you're used to and brought up with influence your preference between paper and screen?

CrowleyHammer 10:49 Mon May 9

Yes, I love audio books -- but with a proviso. It's odd, but I'm quite happy to listen to history or non-fiction, but not so keen on listening to novels. Much prefer to actually read a novel.
